That night my father was ordered to go pick up water from the well. He was about 7 years old. He got the bucket and started slowly toward the back patio. The door was difficult to open because of the humidity. After a little struggle the door opened with a long complaint.
It was totally dark.
As soon as he closed the door he saw it again. A big blue dog. His tail up and wiggling.
The dog was walking about 3 steps behind a man that looked bent. Briefly the dog look at my father with lightened eyes, but then continued walking.
My father just started following the dog but realized the bucket was making much noise. The man and the dog stopped to look at him. Again their eyes looked lightened.
He felt like a bucket of ice was dropped over him. He stood there frozen. The bucket vibrating in his hand. His legs felt like wool and his throat felt dry.
Suddenly he realized that he was seeing dog and man in spite of being immersed in total darkness. He could not see anything else. He did not have the time to find and light the kerosene lamp before seeing the dog. “I’m too scared to think about this”, he remembered thinking, concentrating in the two figures that now started to walk again obviously advancing toward the well.
He still could not moved.
The bent man, who’s body was also blue, like the dog, seemed to climb over the border of the well and disappeared or dropped away. The dog stood up in two feet looking inside the well for a moment, and then turn around to where my father was.
The blue dog seemed bigger and like glowing the closer he got. My father saw it coming right in front of him. However the dog turned and, in front of his eyes, walked into the wall and went in.
