The truth was that Antonio had been really confused since he had seen those beings at the high mountain. He constantly dreamed of those creatures and fearfully realized that he wanted to see them again.
So he decided to speak to Luis, the priest that took him up to see the creatures the first time.
Luis was sure that to go again was not a good idea. “Antonio, he said, I’m sure that I did wrong to take you up there. May God forgive me but I think Satan got a hold of your thoughts after we went there and you must rebuke all that.”
So he proposed a plan for Antonio to follow to get rid of his obsessive desire to see the creatures again.
The first thing was to follow a very strict plan of reading and studying the Bible every day for at least an hour. To take notes of all his questions and the insights and then take them to him to talk and discuss all his findings.
He also recommended that Antonio visit people all over the village and offer to do some carpentry, plumbing or any other small repairs for them. This will keep him busy and hopefully so tired that he will sleep without nightmares anymore.
Antonio felt that he had to work hard to gain God’s trust again and rebuke the devil.
Everything seemed to be going fine while Antonio followed the plan, and many people in town enjoyed his help with their homes, patios, and gardens.
Antonio felt very satisfied with all this work that was bringing him God’s appreciation.
However, in his Bible readings, Antonio found himself very involved in the book of Romans, written by Paul. In the first chapter he found these verses:
Romans 1:16-17
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”” (“Romans 1:16-17 NKJV – – Bible Gateway,” n.d.)
Antonio was puzzled by these words and asked Luis why he was so disturbed by these words. Luis did not say anything but brought Antonio to a closet that was always locked. There Luis reached to a shelf and got an old book entitled: “Historia de Martin Lutero su vida, obras y doctrinas” (History of Martin Luther, his life, works and doctrines) written by Jean Marie Vincent Audin in 1856. (Audin 1856)
Antonio talked to Luis with a question in his eyes. “Who was this Luther?”
Luis was surprised that Antonio had not been told about the Reformation during his training at the seminary . So, locking again the closet, he pushed Antonio out of the hall where they were and he told him very fast about Martin Luther. Luis later went to his humble room and found a paper where he had copied these words attributed to Martin Luther:
“I greatly longed to understand Paul’s Epistle to the Romans and nothing stood in the way but that one expression, ‘the justice of God,’ because I took it to mean that justice whereby God is just and deals justly in punishing the unjust. My situation was that, although an impeccable monk, I stood before God as a sinner troubled in conscience, and I had no confidence that my merit would assuage him.
“Therefore I did not love a just and angry God, but rather hated and murmured against him. Yet I clung to the dear Paul and had a great yearning to know what he meant.
“Night and day I pondered until I saw the connection between the justice of God and the statement that ‘the just shall live by his faith.’ Then I grasped that the justice of God is that righteousness by which through grace and sheer mercy God justifies us through faith. Thereupon I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise. The whole of Scripture took on a new meaning, and whereas before the ‘justice of God’ had filled me with hate, now it became to me inexpressibly sweet in greater love. This passage of Paul became to me a gate to heaven.” (Luther 1985)
Antonio was amazed and he proceeded to devour the book at the first opportunity he had.
