I traveled a lot by myself but not by myself.
Everywhere I went it was His presence that gave me confidence and no fear at all.
There were so many occasions when I did not find anybody waiting for me at an unknown country and airport. But God was with me, and he always arranged somebody to help me or gave me the wisdom to deal with the situation.
If I had to recover a heavy monitor from the airport’s luggage carousel, He provided a drunken airport employee in Costa Rica to get sober and get the monitor for me.
When at Customs I had to check my bag containing computers parts that were not supposed to enter Brazil at that time, God placed a person waiting in line in front of me and carrying so many Bibles in his bag, that they let me go without opening my luggage.
When trying to recover a hard drive that had been confiscated at another airport in Peru, God gave me a wonderful airport policeman to accompany and pray with me to locate and get the hard drive lost, in between thousands of confiscated objects, under the airport platform, and before my next flight.
Arriving in Singapore at 2:00 a.m. in the morning, there was nobody there to pick me up. (I was also checked for drugs after another passenger before me was arrested for that.) God reminded me that some time ago I had been given a phone number for a British missionary in that country, and he and his wife came to pick me up.
In spite of my weak stomach, God allowed me to survive in Guatemala for more than a week eating nothing but refried beans and, consequently, having disastrous diarrhea.
After a long day of training people in how to use word processors, I ended up crossing Central Park in New York at 3:00 p.m. in the morning in a taxi driven by a man who only spoke Arabic and obviously was not happy with the big Bible I had with me. God’s protection was very evident to me that night.
All the times I traveled in buses full of babies, chickens, and piglets, He was there allowing me to see the humor in the situation.
I had to rent a small car in Paris to drive to the French Bible Societies and God allowed me to speed legally because it was a high-speed road.
I had an accident when people, who were waiting for the last train in France before a train strike started, pushed me and I fell between the platform and the train. I hurt my left leg in such a way that the muscle remained deformed for the rest of my life. But God kept me from breaking any bones, and I was able to walk, despite the pain, and the only thing remaining was a permanent back pain and the deformed pulled muscle.
When working late at night at my office in Miami, God unexplainably delayed two men who were obviously coming in my direction, giving me time to get my car in the parking lot.
Many times, when walking on streets in areas that obviously were not safe, I felt as if an invisible bell was covering me.
David, in Psalm 91 (ISV) clearly explains His protection.
9 “Lord, you are my refuge!”
Because you chose the Most High as your dwelling place,
10 no evil will fall upon you,
and no affliction will approach your tent,
11 for He will command his angels
to protect you in all your ways.
12 With their hands they will lift you up
so you will not trip over a stone.
